Got Diapers?

Taking care of a baby is a messy job, especially when it comes to diaper changing. An integral part of raising babies for most western families is the use of diapers.  We are fortunate to be living in a technologically advanced era with instant access to information and the ability to purchase baby products with a simple click of a mouse or the tap of a finger.

With a growing trend toward sustainability, more families are choosing to buy cloth diapers. A disposable diaper gets used once and is then thrown away. Reusable diapers can be used until they are outgrown, or worn-out from continuous use, saving the landfills from non-biodegradable waste and decreasing the consumption of non-renewable resources such as petroleum.

The days of pins are rubber pants are far behind us. Cloth diapers range from simple prefolds and fitteds that need a separate cover, to pockets and All-In-One (AIO) diapers that have a built-in waterproof cover. Each style of diaper has its advantage, allowing families a number of options to choose from that will suit their preferences and budgets.

When deciding what type of cloth diapers to buy, ask yourself what is most important to you - is it cost, ease of use, drying time, size adjustability or something else?  For my family, ease of use and convenience were the most important factors in deciding to use AIO style diapers. I knew that having a baby would mean I would be sleep deprived and face other challenges that first-time mothers typically face, so I wanted diapers that were as easy to use as possible. The ease of using AIOs with hook and loop closures outweighed occasional diaper chains from the wash.  Another factor I had to consider was cost. Despite being the most expensive diaper style, AIOs are still cheaper than disposable diapers, even if you buy various sizes from birth through potty training, including the costs of washing and drying. I found the old saying “you get what you pay for” held true for cloth diapers, but due to their washable and reusable nature they can be used on subsequent babies as well, further diminishing their seemingly high cost.

After deciding which style might work best for you, it is a good idea to try various brands to discover which you like best. Researching and reading reviews are helpful in determining what to buy, but trying and using a diaper on your baby is the best way to determine how well the diaper works for you. As with all products, what works wonderfully well for most users, will not work for everyone, this is why trying a few different brands is crucial. You might even like to try various styles if you’re not sure what might work best for you. Remember this; cloth diapering is a lot easier than you might think! Enjoy the time you spend taking care of your baby because they grow up fast.
